Retired Justice, Madam Gladys Gafoor is
now the subject of a tribunal. Why? The former deputy chairman of the Integrity
Commission is being investigated for “certain conduct”. I understand the
secrecy surrounding the matter but I’m guessing that means she misbehaved in
public office. From media reports one can only guess that she leaked
information to one Andre Baghoo (journalist) regarding matters of the Integrity
Commission; all matters of which are confidential.
After the Baghoo story broke, apparently
an investigation was started into how information was leaked. All signs seemed
to point to Gafoor. In the ensuing months there were accusations and
counteraccusations between the Chairman, the President, Gafoor and
commentators. A changed press release, denials etc. The regular Trinidad &
Tobago thing.
However, if this proves to be true then
Mrs Gafoor, you have committed a serious gaffe and I will be sorely
disappointed in you. Being a former judge of the courts I shudder to think that
this is your modus operandi!
Why!....the consequences of a negative
outcome of this tribunal may not auger well for you nor our justice system.
The public’s already extremely low
confidence in our judicial system could tumble even lower. All cases passed in
front of you may become subjects of appeals and judgments overturned; as your
character and conduct could be called into question!
And then there’s the matter of your personal
integrity. Your name will go down in ignominy in the annals of Trinidad and
Tobago’s history! I can see it now.... “Disgraced
judge dismissed from Integrity Commission; hundreds of cases to be reviewed.
story by Andre Baghoo”
Why, it could even throw this country’s
foreign relations into chaos! *GASP!*
Why President Richards could even take
back his Public Service medal of merit (gold) for your inexcusable behaviour! THAT would be the last stroke to seal
your public service coffin!!!
Alas, these are only the possible
ramifications knocking around in my mindless brain IF the tribunal’s findings go against her. In such a case should we
feel sorry for her? Not I, said Ayana! She is too learned and experienced to do
such things; and really did you expect anything different from our unethical
journalists? If the tribunal clears her name, well then the dogs will go after
Ken Gordon and the President! My name is Hess; I’m not in that mess! I await
judgement.
